Voidsayer is a new game that builds on the classic Pokémon formula with a dark fantasy twist. Like Pokémon, it’s a turn-based RPG where players aim to “catch ’em all,” but the creatures in Voidsayer are shrouded in a darker, more sinister atmosphere. The game is described as a “dark and captivating 2D RPG strategy,” combining traditional monster-catching elements with a gloomy narrative and setting.
Players start by selecting one of three starter creatures: a baby dragon, a large cat-like creature, or a sorrowful, eldritch octopus. Following this choice, they venture into procedurally generated levels to capture more monsters, restore a settlement, and combat the encroaching dark forces. The game’s premise involves battling against the Abyss’s unleashed creatures, with the goal of using them against their own kind.
The structure of Voidsayer is reminiscent of other roguelikes such as Darkest Dungeon and Slay the Spire. The game features procedurally generated paths filled with random events, such as distress calls from dungeons or hazardous traps in abandoned towns. This approach introduces a level of unpredictability and challenge, requiring players to adapt their strategies on the fly.
Combat in Voidsayer retains the familiar turn-based, party-centric mechanics of Pokémon, including a type chart that determines attack effectiveness. The game includes classic types like fire and water but also introduces additional categories such as jinn, ghosts, and mediums. As players progress, their creatures can evolve, providing a layer of progression and adding depth to the Lovecraftian-themed visuals.
Currently, Voidsayer has no official release date. However, it recently surpassed its Kickstarter funding goal, which may explain the presence of placeholder art and text on its Steam page. The game’s development is progressing, and more details are expected as the project moves forward.
