Frogwares has just released the spine-chilling sequel to its Lovecraftian hit, The Sinking City.
Unlike its predecessor, which blended action-adventure with mystery, the upcoming installment, aptly named The Sinking City 2, is diving headfirst into the realm of horror, promising a darker and more intense experience, as affirmed by Frogwares Head of Publishing Sergey Oganesyan.
Speaking with Xbox Wire, Oganesyan emphasized the studio’s enthusiasm for the horror genre, citing the success of The Sinking City as a pivotal moment.
“The Sinking City is one of our most successful titles because of our stronger horror genre leanings and the setting,”
he stated.
“For us, it was kind of a breakthrough, and we are super excited to work on a full-scale horror game.”
While the sequel embraces a more aggressive tone, it doesn’t abandon its detective roots. Players can still employ their cunning to solve optional puzzles and explore decaying mansions and abandoned hospitals.
Combat takes center stage, however, as players scavenge for resources and wield a range of 1920s-inspired firearms to fend off Eldritch monsters. Frogwares aims to weave a “morally grey” narrative inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
In response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the Ukrainian-based developer is turning to Kickstarter, a strategy previously employed for Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened, to create a financial safety net for the studio.
The campaign aims to secure additional resources for the game, which is slated for a 2025 release if funding goals are met.
Frogwares CEO Wael Amr highlighted the importance of crowdfunding in a press release, stating:
“Through Kickstarter and our supporters, we built ourselves a safety net that saved us more than once. From power cuts as our electrical infrastructure was targeted for months to the need for team members to relocate at very short notice, this financial safety net proved invaluable to us. So we need to do the same now with The Sinking City 2 as this game is vastly bigger and more complex.”
