Mick Foley took to Instagram to reminisce about his iconic Hardcore Match against Randy Orton at Backlash 2004, marking its 20th anniversary.
The WWE legend expressed gratitude to Orton for their memorable clash, noting it as his favorite career match. Foley appreciated Orton’s contribution to the historic bout and praised their chemistry in the ring.
“20 YEARS AGO TODAY! Yes, my match with @randyorton at Backlash was exactly 20 years ago, today. This was my favorite match of my career – and I hear after all these years, it might still be Randy’s favorite as well… Thank you Randy, for making history with me that night — I think we brought out the best in each other!…have a nice day!”
wrote Foley.
In response to Foley’s tribute, Orton previously acknowledged the significance of their encounter. He highlighted Foley’s determination to showcase his abilities despite injuries, recognizing Foley’s efforts to pass the torch to him as a rising star.
“I’ve got this future Hall of Famer, this all-time great Mick Foley. He’s gotta prove that he’s still got it. Comes out with all the injuries he’s sustained throughout his career and he put it all on the line to show the world that he could still go and to pass that torch to a young Randy Orton. And that’s what he did,”
said Randy Orton.
While Foley has retired from in-ring competition, Orton continues to compete on SmackDown.
Despite a recent setback in his quest for the United States Championship at WrestleMania XL, Orton’s legacy as a WWE icon remains unquestionable.
