A chanrming new 2D action platformer and Metroidvania game, Akatori Chapter One, has just launched its prologue as a free demo on Steam. Developed by Code Wakers, this game blends classic Metroidvania elements with intense action platforming, featuring stunning pixel art landforms and smooth character animations that immediately catch the eye.
Dynamic Combat System
In Akatori, players assume the role of Mako, a young martial artist whose encounter with a powerful being named Akatori grants them a unique staff that serves as Akatori’s prison.
This staff becomes a pivotal tool in combat and platforming, allowing for a dynamic gameplay experience. Players can switch between staff combat and hand-to-hand combat seamlessly, utilizing the staff’s extended reach and power for stronger attacks.
However, using the staff depletes its energy, requiring players to strategically switch to hand-to-hand combat to replenish its power. The staff can also be thrown to stick on walls or floors, offering new discoveries and possibilities and enhancing traversal mechanics.
Environmental Chaos Mechanics
Akatori introduces a unique environmental mechanic centred around the Kohakujo, a mystical nexus of worlds and energy affected by the chaos. Spending time in the Kohakujo leads to the accumulation of chaos, dynamically altering the environment.
This can manifest as hazardous changes like crumbling floors or open up new pathways for exploration. The full game promises over ten distinct biomes, each with its own dangers and species, promising a rich and varied gameplay experience.
