A decade has passed since the arrival of Dark Souls 2, and enthusiasts can now relish the Soulslike sequel with enhanced frame rates, thanks to modding ingenuity.
Released on March 13, DS2FrameUnlimiter empowers players to experience the definitive version of Dark Souls 2, Scholar of the First Sin, at 120fps and beyond. According to its description on NexusMods, the mod eliminates the game’s default frame limiter while addressing speedup issues typically encountered beyond the 60fps threshold.
As the mod’s creator, emoose, elucidates, health and stamina drain (and regeneration) should now align with the 60fps version, with weapons maintaining their standard degradation rates. Furthermore, essential aspects like jump height, speed, and cloth physics should exhibit consistent behavior across various frame rates.
However, emoose underscores that DS2FrameUnlimiter remains a work in progress, acknowledging the possibility of other game elements being tied to framerate. Additionally, the mod is currently compatible only with offline mode, as its impact on multiplayer is under evaluation. Future integration into online play is contemplated, contingent on ensuring a seamless experience for all players.
The outcome is undeniably remarkable, offering Soulslike aficionados ample opportunity to revisit the realm of Dark Souls while anticipating the Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree, slated for June. Dark Souls 2, often overshadowed, proves itself worthy of exploration once again.
In our Dark Souls 2 review, we hailed it as “an extraordinary game” that demands concentration and rewards persistence. “You will encounter numerous deaths and trials, but press onward, and you’ll discover an exceptional sequel that not only encapsulates the essence of its predecessor but also stands as a remarkable experience in its own right.”
