Wrestling veteran Konnan recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming Intercontinental Title clash between Sami Zayn and Gunther at WrestleMania XL, shedding light on WWE’s strategy to rejuvenate Zayn’s momentum.
Gunther, known as The Ring General, has held the Intercontinental Title since mid-2022, showcasing dominance against formidable opponents like Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Jey Uso.
However, with Zayn emerging as the challenger after a Gauntlet match victory on WWE RAW, speculation swirls about the outcome of their impending showdown.
Speaking on the Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Konnan delved into WWE’s intentions behind the matchup. He suggested that WWE aims to reignite Zayn’s momentum, which waned following his departure from The Bloodline storyline.
Konnan elaborated, stating,
“Well, I think that, you know, Gunther is doing incredible work and we don’t want him to drop [the title] but he’s gotta give the rub to somebody, and I think Sami was really hot and this maybe a way to get him hot again.”
Konnan emphasized the significance of Zayn’s potential victory, highlighting the boost it could provide to his character development.
“We know that match will be great. And like I said before, I think they wanna get back to Sami because he lost so much steam when they took him out of The Bloodline and he was really over and this might get him over again because this guy’s so legit that whoever he gives a rub to, if they take advantage of it, they could really elevate somebody more than they really are,”
he added.
In contrast, wrestling veteran Disco Inferno expressed reservations about Zayn’s suitability as a babyface champion, suggesting that Zayn’s strengths lie in his heel persona.
Despite acknowledging the potential of the matchup, Disco Inferno questioned whether it truly belonged on the WrestleMania stage, proposing it as a main event for WWE RAW instead.
As WrestleMania XL approaches, the clash between Zayn and Gunther continues to captivate fans, with the outcome poised to impact the trajectory of both superstars in WWE’s dynamic landscape.
