WWE narratives often revolve around title shifts and prolonged pursuits for championship glory. Road Dogg, the Executive Vice President of Live Events at WWE, holds the belief that R-Truth stands as one of the rare WWE stars who doesn’t necessarily require a world title reign to solidify his legacy.
R-Truth boasts an impressive resume as a two-time Hardcore Champion, two-time United States Champion, and once Tag Team Champion alongside Kofi Kingston.
Moreover, the 52-year-old wrestler etched his name in WWE history with an unparalleled 54 reigns as the 24/7 Champion between 2019 and 2022.
At present, WWE’s male world titles are held by Seth Rollins as the World Heavyweight Champion and Roman Reigns as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. Speaking on his Oh You Didn’t Know podcast, Road Dogg elaborated on why other wrestlers might benefit more from a title reign than R-Truth:
“In all honesty, I’ve been giving that a lot of thought, and I don’t know, one, that he needs the title ever, and I don’t know that you wanna give it to him, and I know that sounds harsh and sounds weird. Could you find a scenario? In a heartbeat, you could find a scenario to put the title on him and give him a run. I just don’t know if that’s what the character is all about.” [31:44 – 32:31]
In recent months, R-Truth has been engaged in comedic segments with The Judgment Day. Additionally, he amused fans on social media by jesting about traveling to Austria instead of Australia for Elimination Chamber.
Regarding how Road Dogg would envision R-Truth’s pursuit of a WWE title, he acknowledges that while R-Truth may not necessarily need a title, circumstances could align for him to capture a championship.
Under his real name, Ron Killings, Truth held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship twice during his tenure at TNA.
Road Dogg further suggested that for R-Truth to be perceived as a credible contender, he would need to secure victories in a more serious manner:
“When he wins a match, it’s almost like he falls into it,” Road Dogg remarked. “He’s not trying to do this, he’s not doing that. What we would have to do is, if he was gonna have a little run there, is legitimize him a little bit. He’d have to start actually working a little bit, in my opinion, and I don’t think he could fall into it. I think he’d have to win it.” [32:33 – 32:56]
In the same podcast episode, Road Dogg also elaborated on the reasons behind the conclusion of his podcast after nearly two years.
