Aggro Crab, the brains behind the vibrant Soulslike adventure Another Crab’s Treasure, is feeling a bit jittery about potential competition looming on the horizon. With the buzz surrounding the possible release of Hades 2 and Hollow Knight: Silksong, there’s a fear that their game might get overshadowed.
But hold your breath, Silksong fans! Despite no major updates, the anticipation remains palpable, especially with a Nintendo Indie World Showcase on the horizon. And let’s not forget Hades 2, where eager fans can now sign up for the technical test.
With all this excitement swirling, there’s a chance Another Crab’s Treasure might find itself vying for attention against these giants upon its release next week—an outcome Aggro Crab is hoping to avoid. As they put it on Twitter, “It better just be us vs Stellar Blade like god intended.”
Stellar Blade isn’t the only contender Another Crab’s Treasure will be squaring off against. Sand Land is also slated for release the day after. When this was brought up, Aggro Crab gracefully acknowledged, “Our respects to the GOAT, we could never compete.”
While Aggro Crab lightens the mood a little, last month’s events shed light on the real challenges indie games face. When EA dropped a whopping 11 games on Steam simultaneously, a couple of indies found themselves knocked out of the coveted New & Trending tab.
Potions: A Curious Tale, a project a decade in the making, felt the blow as years of marketing and anticipation evaporated in an instant.
Fortunately, Potions managed to bounce back and found success, selling nearly 12,000 copies by late March. Yet, the incident serves as a cautionary tale for developers, highlighting the risks of launching amidst a crowded field where visibility is scarce.
In the case of Another Crab’s Treasure, the looming presence of Hades 2 and Silksong might not pose much of a threat before its April 25 release.
We’ll have to wait and see what unfolds at today’s Indie World Showcase, particularly if Silksong decides to make its long-awaited debut.
