Square Enix and Tencent are reportedly collaborating on a mobile adaptation of the popular MMO, Final Fantasy 14. This joint effort is seen as an extension of their strategic partnership initiated in 2018. While details about the project remain sparse, it’s speculated that the game is intended for mobile platforms, although it’s uncertain whether it will be exclusive to certain devices or available across the board.
Square Enix’s president, Yosuke Matsuda, acknowledged ongoing discussions with Tencent regarding various projects without divulging specifics. This development comes in the wake of an earlier cancellation of an unannounced Nier mobile game, hinting at shifting priorities within Square Enix’s mobile gaming initiatives.
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, recently expressed hesitance towards returning to the franchise due to his enjoyment of Final Fantasy 14. This sentiment underscores the impact and popularity of the MMO among even its creators.
Meanwhile, Naoki Yoshida, director, and producer of Final Fantasy 14, addressed early issues with the game’s Dawntrail expansion. In a blog post, Yoshida apologized for technical problems encountered during early access, assuring players that the team was actively investigating and addressing reported issues, such as Xbox transition freezes and animation glitches across all platforms.
The collaboration between Square Enix and Tencent reflects a strategic move to expand the reach of Final Fantasy 14 into the mobile gaming market, potentially bringing the beloved MMO to a wider audience beyond traditional gaming platforms.
