Fans of “Spaceballs” can look forward to a sequel, as confirmed by Josh Gad in an Instagram post on June 18. Gad, who will co-write, co-produce, and star in the film, shared his excitement and mentioned that his phone had been buzzing non-stop with the news. The post included a screenshot of The Insneider’s announcement on X (formerly Twitter) about the new “Spaceballs” installment.
Gad revealed that the sequel’s development is in its early stages and that he is collaborating with Mel Brooks, the legendary filmmaker behind the original 1987 space opera parody. At 97, Brooks is set to produce the film.
Gad expressed his admiration for Brooks and his commitment to honoring the legacy of the original film, along with co-writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, director Josh Greenbaum, and executive producer Kevin Salter.
According to the report, the sequel is being developed at Amazon MGM Studios, with Gad, Samit, and Hernandez writing the script.
Samit and Hernandez are known for their work on projects like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Addams Family 2,” while Greenbaum directed the 2021 comedy “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” Further plot details are currently under wraps as the film is still in its early development phase.
This isn’t Gad’s first venture into rebooting classic films originally starring Rick Moranis. In May 2019, Gad was cast in a reboot of “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” a 1989 family adventure film featuring Moranis as Wayne Szalinski. The reboot, titled “Shrunk,” will see Gad playing Nick Szalinski, Wayne’s grown son. Gad had previously teased his involvement in this project on Instagram in January 2022.
However, production of “Shrunk” has faced multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, scheduling conflicts, and budget issues. Despite these challenges, Gad has continued to keep fans updated and encouraged them to express their interest to Disney. Disney has not commented on the production delays, but Gad remains optimistic about bringing the film to fruition.
