Ubisoft has unveiled a new charitable initiative tied to Skull and Bones, offering players a chance to make a real-world impact on ocean conservation while indulging in the pirate-themed adventure. Dubbed “Waves of Change,” this in-game charity event runs until March 31st, with Ubisoft setting a fundraising goal of €300,000 ($325,000 USD) for the Oceana charity, dedicated to the preservation, protection, and restoration of oceans.
All players of Skull and Bones, including those on the free trial, are automatically enrolled in the event. Participants can contribute to the collective progress pool by engaging with in-game activities such as defeating Skirmisher and Headhunter enemies or taking down the notorious Philippe La Peste. The progress towards the donation target will be transparently tracked and displayed on a dedicated website.
As an added incentive, players will receive the exclusive Pioneer set, a cosmetic reward, for their involvement in the event.
This initiative underscores Ubisoft’s commitment to environmental stewardship, aligning with its participation in the Playing for the Planet Alliance—an initiative urging gaming companies to minimize their carbon footprint and raise awareness about global environmental challenges. Notably, in 2021, Ubisoft garnered attention by simulating forest fires within one of its games to spotlight climate change issues.
Neven Dravinski, senior producer of Skull and Bones, emphasized Ubisoft’s belief in the potential of gaming to drive environmental awareness and action. Dravinski expressed pride in providing Skull and Bones players with an avenue to support Oceana’s crucial efforts in ocean conservation.
Skull and Bones, after a turbulent development journey spanning several years, finally launched in February. Despite receiving mixed or average review scores from various outlets, including a 4/10 rating from GameSpot, the game’s latest charity drive marks Ubisoft’s ongoing efforts to utilize gaming as a force for positive change.
