WWE veteran Bruce Prichard delved into the historic Backlash 2004 event on his podcast, Something To Wrestle. Among the memorable matches was the Intercontinental Championship clash between Randy Orton and Cactus Jack, known for its brutality.
Orton solidified his status as a top-tier star by triumphing over Cactus Jack in a grueling Hardcore match. Lasting 23 intense minutes, the encounter featured spine-chilling moments, including Orton’s painful descent onto a bed of thumbtacks.
Prichard shared Orton’s reaction upon returning backstage after the match, noting the wrestler’s beaming smile, possibly stemming from relief and pride in his achievement.
“Orton coming back after that match had the biggest grin on his face, probably because he survived it. But I think that Randy felt how great it was, and just the reaction… and that he had accomplished it. So, coming back, and everybody in the locker room just applauded the hell out of the effort in that match and how great it was. So I definitely remember Randy coming back and being ecstatic at the performance.”
Following his victory, Orton received a significant push from WWE, transitioning to challenging for the World Heavyweight Title, which he secured by defeating Chris Benoit at SummerSlam.
Having marked two decades in WWE, Orton remains a prominent figure on SmackDown, showcasing enduring prowess and enduring popularity.
