Former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega has long been celebrated for his ability to excel in various styles of wrestling.
From grueling 60-minute world title clashes to high-flying spectacles and even the occasional foray into death matches, Omega’s versatility has endeared him to fans worldwide.
However, Omega recently hinted that one aspect of his repertoire might be coming to an end, as he reflected on Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page’s Texas Death Match during a recent Twitch stream.
“When I saw that, I thought, ‘Thank goodness someone is pushing the boundaries to this extent,’ because I can never reach those heights. I can never be that extreme.
I’m not going to engage in drinking anyone’s blood,” Omega candidly shared.
“That’s your domain now. You guys can have it.
It was almost liberating to feel like, ‘Okay, death match Kenny is a thing of the past because we’ve got individuals out there who are far more daring than I am.'”
Omega’s clashes with Jon Moxley have often been marked by bloodshed and brutality, notably their Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match at AEW Revolution in 2021.
Regrettably, the match is remembered for its disappointing conclusion, an outcome that Omega finds profoundly disappointing.
“I was genuinely enthusiastic about the concept. It was a tremendous learning experience… and it underscored the complexity involved in crafting a compelling wrestling match, show, or event,” Omega reflected.
“As ‘The Cleaner,’ I strive to maintain control over every aspect so that I can hold myself accountable if things go awry. However, the conclusion of that match was so far beyond my control that it left me somewhat traumatized.”
Omega’s remarks shed light on the challenges and uncertainties inherent in professional wrestling, highlighting the importance of meticulous planning and adaptability in the pursuit of delivering unforgettable performances.
