Jessica Rothe, known for her role in Happy Death Day, is still hopeful for a third installment in the horror franchise. Speaking with ScreenGeek while promoting her new film Boy Kills World, Rothe shared her thoughts on the potential for another film in the Happy Death Day series. She portrayed Tree Gelbman, a college student trapped in a time loop where she repeatedly experiences her own murder.
“Well, I can say Chris Landon has the whole thing figured out. We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row. But my fingers are so crossed. I think Tree deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning.”
Rothe has been vocal about her enthusiasm for Happy Death Day 3, expressing her willingness to reprise her role as Tree. She even joked about returning to the franchise in her later years, akin to Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween.
While fans eagerly await news of a third film, Rothe’s optimism is encouraging, especially given previous statements from director Christopher Landon. Landon previously expressed difficulties in securing support for another sequel due to the mixed performance of Happy Death Day 2U at the box office.
Despite the challenges, the original Happy Death Day proved to be a success, grossing $125.5 million worldwide against a modest budget. However, its sequel failed to replicate the same financial success, earning $64.5 million despite a higher production budget.
In the meantime, audiences can catch Rothe in Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World, where she stars alongside Bill Skarsgård, Michelle Dockery, and others. The action thriller follows Boy, a deaf individual with a vivid imagination, as he seeks vengeance after his family’s murder.
