Hopoo Games, the original creators of Risk of Rain, are feeling a mix of nostalgia and frustration following the sale of the IP to Gearbox and the troubled launch of the Risk of Rain 2 DLC, Seekers of the Storm. Paul Morse of Hopoo directed me to a statement by co-founder Duncan Drummond, who shared that while it’s exciting to see new content, it’s disheartening to watch the new team struggle with technical issues.
Drummond’s statement conveyed his disappointment over the game-breaking bugs caused by an unintended change affecting frame rates. He sympathized with the fans who lost functionality and with the Gearbox developers who are likely feeling immense pressure. Drummond acknowledged the difficulties faced by everyone involved, showing empathy for both sides of the situation.
Despite these challenges, Drummond expressed confidence in Gearbox’s ability to resolve the issues. He emphasized that the Gearbox team is dedicated to fixing the problems and genuinely cares about Risk of Rain. This optimism reflects a belief in Gearbox’s potential to navigate through the current issues and improve the game.
Gearbox has responded to the situation by providing solutions, such as capping the FPS to mitigate physics issues, and has committed to ongoing improvements. Bruno Fontanetti, the design lead at Gearbox, expressed enthusiasm for the future of Risk of Rain and reassured fans that the team is diligently working on patches.
At a recent PAX West panel, Fontanetti reinforced Gearbox’s dedication to the franchise, stating that Seekers of the Storm is just the beginning. He promised more updates and improvements are on the way, indicating that Gearbox is committed to both resolving the current problems and expanding the game’s content in the future.
