He-Man fans have something big to look forward to. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films have announced that the live-action “Masters of the Universe” movie will hit theatres on June 5, 2026.
Creative Team Behind the Scenes
The film will be directed by Travis Knight, who will work with Chris Butler on the script. Butler and Knight have previously worked together on films like “Paranorman” and “Kubo and the Two Strings.” The screenplay builds on earlier drafts by David Callaham and brothers Aaron and Adam Nee.
The movie’s producers are Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch from Escape Artists.
Plot of the New Movie
The official synopsis reads: “10-year-old Prince Adam crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword — the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!”
A Long Road to Reboot
This reboot has been planned for almost 20 years, with Sony and Netflix previously attempting to bring it to life. In 2023, Netflix discontinued its version of the film, which had already cost them $30 million in development.
“Masters of the Universe” started as a toy line in 1982 and quickly became a hit with an animated series from 1983 to 1985. It has seen many reboots and spin-offs since. The only previous live-action film, starring Dolph Lundgren, was released in 1987.
