Everyone is familiar with Skeletor, the skull-faced nemesis of He-Man, a prominent figure in both action figures and cartoons. Beyond the iconic imagery and memes, little is often known about his origins and the path that led him to become the infamous “Evil Lord of Destruction” within the Masters of the Universe franchise. Fortunately, Dark Horse Comics is set to unravel the mysteries surrounding Skeletor’s past through a new prequel comic, shedding light on his connection with another notorious villain, Hordak.
As a complement to the upcoming Netflix animated series, Masters of the Universe: Revolution, the series’ creators, Tim Sheridan, Rob David, and Ted Biaselli, will delve into Skeletor’s history in a four-issue prequel comic aptly titled Masters of the Universe: Revolution.
Collaborating with artist Daniel HDR, inker Keith Champagne, colorist Brad Simpson, and letterer AndWorld Design, the creative team will explore the intricate relationship between Skeletor and Hordak, the primary antagonist in the original She-Ra: Princess of Power animated series and the leader of the Evil Horde. The inaugural issue will showcase a main cover by Dave Wilkins and a variant cover by Tyler Boss.
Dark Horse’s official description of the comic promises a journey to the earliest days of a significant and complex alliance. Hordak, an ambitious general eager to leave his mark, joins forces with Skeletor, an aspiring mage hungry for power. Their collaboration involves merging ancient Eternian magic with advanced Horde technology, a union that could fulfill their deepest, malevolent desires. However, the challenge lies in their ability to survive each other’s ambitions.
While Skeletor’s origin as Keldor, the half-brother of He-Man’s father, King Randor, has been previously explored, his ties to Hordak and the Evil Horde trace back to the original animated series.
Fans can anticipate the premiere of Masters of the Universe: Revolution, the animated series, on Netflix on January 25, followed by the release of Masters of the Universe: Revolution #1, the prequel comic, on May 15.
