In a recent episode of the 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff podcast, former RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff delved into the remarkable journey of Cody Rhodes, a decorated 13-time champion across both WWE and AEW.
Bischoff couldn’t help but admire Rhodes’ bold decision-making, particularly his departure from WWE in 2016.
Reflecting on Rhodes’ trajectory, Bischoff remarked,
“It will get bigger and bigger because we’re caught up in it still.”
He highlighted the significance of Rhodes returning to WWE, where his career began, then transitioning to AEW and becoming a pivotal figure in its inception.

Bischoff emphasized the courage it took for Rhodes to walk away from both companies, drawing parallels to the boldness characteristic of his late father, Dusty Rhodes.
Quoting Dusty Rhodes, Bischoff emphasized the importance of pursuing happiness and fulfillment in one’s career. He praised Rhodes for recognizing when a situation wasn’t aligning with his vision and having the courage to pursue a different path, regardless of financial security.
Bischoff acknowledged that Rhodes sacrificed a substantial contract and stability by leaving AEW, but ultimately found fulfillment by following his instincts.
Despite the risks involved, Rhodes’ decision paid off, both personally and financially. Contrary to popular belief, leaving WWE can sometimes lead to greater financial opportunities.
Rhodes’ gamble proved successful when he secured lucrative deals with companies like Hot Topic and New Japan Pro Wrestling, substantially increasing his earnings post-WWE.
In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Rhodes highlighted the financial benefits of his post-WWE endeavors, stating,
“They [The Young Bucks] set up the deal with Hot Topic, and they’re going to be the first 7-figure downside characters that New Japan Pro Wrestling has.”
This success underscores the potential for wrestlers to thrive outside the confines of WWE and find financial prosperity in alternative ventures.
While WWE contracts offer substantial financial security, Rhodes’ story serves as a testament to the rewards of following one’s passion and taking calculated risks in pursuit of greater fulfillment and success in the ever-evolving landscape of professional wrestling.
