Epic Games has recently unveiled its comprehensive overview of the Epic Games Store’s performance throughout 2023 via its “Epic Games Store 2023 Year in Review” blog post. Among the highlights was a notable surge in consumer spending on the PC platform, coupled with the announcement of an impending iOS store launch in Europe.
In a significant upturn from the previous year, consumer spending on the PC Epic Games Store witnessed a 16% increase in 2023, reaching an impressive $950 million. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that the lion’s share of this expenditure still stems from Epic-produced games. Spending on third-party PC games experienced a 13% decline year-over-year, amounting to $310 million.
Among the titles that commanded substantial player engagement and spending were Epic’s flagship games like Fortnite and Rocket League, alongside popular third-party offerings such as Genshin Impact, Dead Island 2, and Grand Theft Auto 5.
The user base of the Epic Games Store continued its expansion, marking a 17% increase year-over-year to reach 270 million users. Additionally, Epic cross-platform accounts saw a notable uptick of nearly 11%, climbing to 804 million.
In 2023, developers were provided with new self-publishing avenues, leading to a significant expansion in the store’s game catalog. The store welcomed an influx of over 1,300 new titles, nearly doubling the count from the previous year to surpass 1,548 titles by the end of 2022.
On the front of free game offerings, there was a slight reduction in the number of titles provided by Epic Games throughout the year. In total, 86 games were offered with free promotions, compared to 99 in 2022. Nevertheless, these games were claimed collectively 586 million times, albeit a decline from the previous year’s tally of nearly 700 million.
Looking ahead, Epic Games has disclosed plans for the European debut of the Epic Games Store on iOS. Operated by Epic Games Sweden AB, this venture is slated for launch later in the year, promising an expanded platform for users in the region.
