In 2010, “Shrek Forever After” was considered the last movie in the main Shrek series, aside from the Puss in Boots spin-offs and animated series that came later. However, it looks like Shrek is returning. Eddie Murphy, who voices Donkey, has announced that they’ve started recording for “Shrek 5,” and there are plans for a Donkey spin-off movie as well.
During an interview with Collider, Murphy revealed, “We started doing [Shrek 5] four or five months ago. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year. We’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [film].”
Murphy added that while the Donkey spin-off hasn’t entered production yet, it is slated to follow after the completion of “Shrek 5”. He stated, “I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next.”
The existence of “Shrek 5” was first hinted at by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri in an interview with Variety last year. At that time, the original voice cast, including Murphy, Mike Myers, and Cameron Diaz, were in discussions to reprise their roles. However, DreamWorks Animation has not yet made an official announcement regarding “Shrek 5”.
With Murphy confirming his return as Donkey, it is likely that Myers and Diaz will also return as Shrek and Fiona, respectively. This news is exciting for fans who have eagerly awaited the continuation of the beloved franchise.
