Electronic Arts (EA) has announced plans for layoffs affecting a “small number of staff” as a consequence of the closure of two of its mobile games: EA Sports MLB Tap Sports and F1 Mobile Racing.
In a statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz, EA expressed the challenging nature of the decision, recognizing the impact it will have on dedicated communities who have engaged with and enjoyed these games. The company emphasized the weight of this choice, indicating the seriousness with which it was made.
Acknowledging the significance of partnerships in the gaming industry, EA extended gratitude to entities such as the MLB, MLBPA, OneTeam Partners, and MLBPAA for their close collaboration and support.
Regarding F1 Mobile Racing, developed by Codemasters with Eden Games as a development partner, EA clarified its ongoing commitment to the F1 franchise. Importantly, the closure of F1 Mobile Racing will not affect Codemasters’ console and PC F1 franchise, ensuring continuity for fans of the series.
Reaffirming their dedication to the F1 franchise, EA emphasized their continued partnership with Formula One Management, indicating a sustained investment in this aspect of their gaming portfolio.
While MLB Tap Sports stands as EA’s sole MLB game, the future of the partnership remains uncertain. However, EA maintains another baseball title, Super Mega Baseball, which, although lacking an MLB license, features agreements with individual professional baseball players, providing an alternative avenue for baseball gaming enthusiasts.
