Sony presented a diverse lineup of upcoming titles for PlayStation 5 in 2024 and beyond during the recent State of Play event. The showcase concluded with a detailed preview of the sequel to Death Stranding, titled Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.
Directed by Hideo Kojima, the highly anticipated sequel features the return of Norman Reedus as Sam Bridges and Léa Seydoux. The storyline revolves around their efforts to expand the network to new territories, with an enhanced emphasis on combat. Death Stranding 2 is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2025.
Kojima also revealed that his studio is actively working on a “next-generation tactical espionage game” for PS5, reminiscent of his acclaimed Metal Gear Solid series. However, full-scale development for this project will commence only after the release of Death Stranding 2.
A major surprise during the event was the unexpected release of Silent Hill: The Short Message, a new short-form first-person installment in Konami’s renowned horror series. The game became available for free immediately after the State of Play presentation. Additionally, attendees were treated to a fresh glimpse of the Silent Hill 2 remake.
Sega announced the upcoming Sonic game for this year, titled Sonic x Shadow Generations. Building on the successful formula of 2011’s Sonic Generations, the game incorporates a mix of 2D and 3D elements. Shadow the Hedgehog makes a return in this title and will also feature in the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 film released this year.
In other announcements, Sony revealed a remastered version of the popular horror game Until Dawn for PlayStation 5, with a simultaneous release for PC later this year. PlayStation 5 ports are also in the pipeline for the indie hit Dave The Diver, set to arrive in April, along with Godzilla-themed DLC in May. Additionally, players can anticipate the releases of Stunlock Studio’s V Rising and MiHoYo’s Zenless Zone Zero on PS5.
PlayStation VR 2 introduced two new titles: Legendary Tales, a fantasy action game, and Metro Awakening, a spin-off of the first-person shooter series inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels.
Other notable highlights from the event included a new story trailer for Judas, the next game directed by BioShock’s Ken Levine, extended previews of Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin, and new trailers for Dragon’s Dogma, Foamstars and Helldivers 2.
