Conor McGregor inadvertently stirred up his long-standing feud with Jose Aldo last year by proposing a boxing match between the two fighters.
The rivalry between ‘The Notorious’ and ‘The King of Rio’ is etched in UFC history for its intensity. McGregor famously taunted the Brazilian during a global press tour, aiming to get under Aldo’s skin before their highly anticipated showdown.
Their clash headlined UFC 194, where ‘The Notorious’ stunned the MMA world with a lightning-fast 13-second knockout, claiming the featherweight championship. Despite their past tensions, they had appeared to reconcile and even develop a friendly relationship, until McGregor briefly reignited their rivalry.
McGregor’s Proposal and Aldo’s Reaction
Last April, McGregor’s and Aldo’s paths crossed again after Aldo’s boxing bout against former foe Jeremy Stephens. McGregor, the former two-division UFC champion, reacted on his social media, suggesting another chapter to their rivalry—this time in a boxing ring. McGregor wrote:
“Me and Aldo should box”
Aldo, during his post-fight press conference, was visibly upset upon learning of McGregor’s tweet, interpreting it as a slight against his performance. He lashed out, accusing McGregor of using talk merely to sell fights rather than genuinely competing. Aldo expressed:
“Conor [McGregor] is an a*****… He only talks now because he has a fight booked, and does so to sell anything, not to actually fight. He’s a son of a b****… And tell Conor fu*k yourself again…We should have fought [again] in the UFC and he never wanted, and now he’s talking sh*t nonstop.” [H/T MMA Fighting]
Despite this heated exchange, it seems the two fighters have once again settled their differences and returned to a cordial relationship.
