Chris Hemsworth Reflects on Thor: Love and Thunder: ‘I Became a Parody of Myself’
Chris Hemsworth recently opened up about his lingering regrets regarding Thor: Love and Thunder, the 2022 MCU sequel. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Hemsworth expressed his disappointment with the film’s reception, admitting he took the improvisations too far, leading to what he describes as a self-parody.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.”
Released as part of Phase Four of the MCU on July 8, 2022, Thor: Love and Thunder saw Taika Waititi returning as director, featuring Thor’s battle with Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher and a reunion with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, now superpowered.
While Thor: Ragnarok’s comedic tone won praise, Love and Thunder faced criticism for leaning too heavily into silliness, resulting in tonal inconsistencies and underdeveloped characters.
In addition to his reflections on Love and Thunder, Hemsworth shared occasional frustrations with his role as Thor, feeling at times like “a security guard” for The Avengers.
“Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team. They got cooler stuff and were having more fun. What’s my character doing? It was always about, ‘You’ve got the wig on. You’ve got the muscles. You’ve got the costume. Where’s the lighting?’ Yeah, I’m part of this big thing, but I’m probably pretty replaceable.”
While Hemsworth harbors some regrets, co-star Robert Downey Jr. commended his portrayal of Thor, calling it “a formidable hat trick” in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
“Thor as a character was super tricky to adapt—lots of implied limitations—but Hemsworth transcended, making him relatable but godlike. He’s the most complex psyche out of all us Avengers.”
Despite uncertainties about his future as Thor, rumors persist about Hemsworth reprising the role for a fifth Thor film and rejoining The Avengers for future installments.
