Marvel star Chris Hemsworth is exploring new horizons with his villainous character, Warlord Dementus, in the upcoming Mad Max prequel, Furiosa.
Speaking with EW, Hemsworth expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with acclaimed director George Miller and to get into a character that allows him to break free from the constraints of superhero roles. He described the experience as a chance to “dirty it up and to be messy and ugly and violent and chaotic.”
Reflecting on his superhero roles, Hemsworth criticized the limitations imposed by the genre, noting the strict adherence to rules for portraying heroes. He contrasted this with the freedom he found in portraying Warlord Dementus, where he could discard these rules and embrace a darker, more unpredictable character.
Despite his success as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Hemsworth admitted to growing weary of certain aspects of his superhero persona. Particularly, he expressed disdain for wearing capes, describing them as impractical and expressing his relief at not having to wear one in Furiosa.
While his role in Furiosa may bear some resemblance to Thor, Hemsworth clarified that any similarities were unintentional. He emphasized the joy he found in portraying a villain and the opportunity to explore a different physicality and demeanor.
Although Hemsworth has expressed some dissatisfaction with his portrayal of Thor in past MCU films, his fellow co-star Robert Downey Jr. has come to his defense, praising Hemsworth’s performance and the complexity he brought to the character.
As Hemsworth continues to diversify his roles beyond the realm of superheroes, fans eagerly anticipate his upcoming performance in Furiosa and look forward to seeing the actor explore new creative avenues.
