Bungie has announced significant buffs, primarily for Destiny 2’s Titan class, in an effort to diversify and enhance their gameplay. The changes are designed to make Titans less reliant on simple melee attacks while adding more depth to their toolkit.
This update responds to long-standing player feedback that Titan’s melee-centric, close-range playstyle has felt too basic and impractical in certain situations. Though their identity as the game’s tank-like frontline remains intact, these new adjustments aim to broaden their combat versatility.
In early 2023, design lead Kevin Yanes discussed feedback on the Titan class, particularly the similarity of their Supers. He emphasized the uniqueness of the Strand Super Berserker, a powerful subclass option while reaffirming Bungie’s commitment to the core Titan fantasy: a fist-focused, resilient fighter.
However, in response to ongoing concerns, the latest buffs aim to make the class feel more varied and dynamic, breaking away from the overly simplistic punching gameplay that had become tiresome for many players.
Bungie’s recent blog post elaborates on their vision for Titans as more than just melee-focused fighters. Titans are described as “bulwarks” of their fire team, excelling in defense, leadership, and frontline combat.
Abilities like Barricade and Overshield contribute to this identity, but the developers want to expand the class beyond its traditional strengths. The upcoming changes aim to add new layers to Titan’s gameplay, making their abilities more engaging and strategic.
One notable change is a general melee buff: unpowered melee attacks will deal 5% more damage in PvP and 20% more in PvE, along with an increased ability to stun enemies.
This is just the beginning of a larger overhaul that will see Titans gain new mechanics like aggro-drawing Barricades, which will force enemies to focus their fire on the barrier, allowing Titans to shoot from cover more safely. This change incorporates a tank-like element, drawing from traditional MMO roles.
Other buffs include a 50% reduction in damage taken by Barricades from non-boss enemies and a 60% reduction in splash damage for players behind a Barricade. These changes make Titans even better at soaking damage and controlling the battlefield.
Additionally, new interactions with Stasis crystals and Diamond Lances, grenade energy regeneration while blocking, and health regeneration mechanics are being introduced, further diversifying Titan builds and strategies.
Aside from Titans, Warlocks and Hunters are also getting some minor Super and ability tweaks. Warlocks’ Nova Warp will deal 20% more damage in PvE, and Hunters’ Spectral Blades will receive the same boost, though this is seen as a smaller adjustment.
Some Hunter abilities, like Combination Blow, are being nerfed slightly, reflecting Bungie’s ongoing efforts to balance the classes. These updates reflect Bungie’s intention to enrich the combat roles of all classes but with a strong emphasis on evolving the Titan class.
