Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, has confirmed that official mod support is currently in development, with an exciting twist – it will be cross-platform and available on consoles.
The announcement was made by Michael Douse, Larian Studios’ director of publishing, on X (formerly Twitter), where he revealed that work is underway on cross-platform mod support.
Douse mentioned that the studio typically refrains from early announcements until projects are closer to completion but decided to make an exception this time due to the significance of the news. Currently, mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 are exclusively accessible on PC through platforms like Nexus Mods.
“We’ve been working on a robust cross-platform plan for mod support to be released later this year,” said Douse. “We love our modding community and we want to support them. It’s coming.”
We generally don’t talk about things til they’re ready, but as you may have read, we’re making an exception. We’ve been working on a robust, cross-platform plan for mod support to be released later in year. We love our modding community and we want to support them. It’s coming. https://t.co/54GsxNshlQ

The wording of Douse’s statement raises a bit of ambiguity regarding whether the entire mod support system will be available this year or if Larian’s plan for mod support will be unveiled within the year. GameSpot has reached out to Larian for clarification on this matter.
Douse also acknowledged that their mod support system is still undergoing development and testing, recognizing the frustration players experience when mods become incompatible after game updates. To address this, Larian’s community team will collaborate with modders to minimize such issues in the future.
On the official Discord server for the game, Larian’s community strategist, WombatMedic, revealed that the team is collaborating with platform providers to establish a pipeline enabling mod creators to distribute mods across various platforms. This support will encompass mods related to classes, user interface, customization, spells, and specific assets and game mechanics. While the next major patch for the game is still months away, it will introduce the initial phases of modding support.
WombatMedic also empathized with players’ frustrations over mods breaking due to frequent game updates, as was the case with Baldur’s Gate 3’s recent Patch 6.
“We know this is frustrating, we understand your desire to play with mods, and we’re committed to making it right,” said WombatMedic.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 6, released on February 16, brought improvements to the RPG’s kissing animations, refined mechanics for dismissing party members, and introduced new idle animations. Additionally, Larian’s accolades continued to grow as Baldur’s Gate 3 received the Game of the Year award at the 27th annual DICE Awards.
