A recent report has emerged suggesting that a new iteration of the Nintendo Switch, tentatively referred to as the Nintendo Switch 2, is anticipated to launch later this year, boasting a custom-made Nvidia chip.
According to sources cited by Reuters, Nvidia is in the process of establishing a dedicated business unit aimed at crafting tailored chips for hardware manufacturers. This initiative has culminated in the development of a bespoke chip designed specifically for the upcoming iteration of Nintendo’s popular handheld gaming system.
The current Nintendo Switch already incorporates Nvidia’s Tegra X1 chip, and the forthcoming version slated for release this year is expected to feature a new custom-designed chip from Nvidia, as per the insider quoted by Reuters.
Interestingly, the report also lends credence to rumors suggesting that Nvidia had been actively pursuing Microsoft in hopes of securing a contract for the development of the next-generation Xbox console.
Unsurprisingly, Nintendo declined to offer any comment on the matter when approached by Reuters.
In a related development, Electronic Arts (EA), the studio behind popular titles like Apex Legends, stated last month that while they cannot officially confirm the existence of the Switch 2, they acknowledge that new platforms present promising opportunities for their business. This statement came following reports suggesting that the Switch 2 would sport a larger eight-inch LCD screen.
Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, recently indicated that the company would unveil its strategy for the upcoming financial year during its next earnings briefing, which is expected to take place sometime in May.
