After 42 years since the debut of the original Tron and 14 years after Tron: Legacy, Disney is preparing to advance the franchise with its third installment, Tron: Ares. At the D23 Expo, Disney revealed the first glimpse of the upcoming film, offering fans an early look at what’s next in this iconic series.
Jared Leto takes on the role of Ares, a program that has transitioned from the digital Grid into the real world. The D23 preview featured Leto alongside key cast members, including Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jeff Bridges, who returns from the original Tron film.
Peters will play Julian Dillinger, a character potentially connected to David Warner’s Ed Dillinger from the first movie, while Cillian Murphy portrayed Ed’s son in the previous sequel.
The preview spotlighted Peters’ character, Julian Dillinger, delivering a speech about the imminent arrival of intelligent life and AI programs into the real world. Jeff Bridges appears to be reprising his role as Kevin Flynn, while Greta Lee’s character, Eve Kim, is described as a programmer who might have played a role in bringing Ares into the real world.
An exciting addition revealed at the event was the involvement of Nine Inch Nails, who will compose the film’s score, promising a distinctive auditory experience for the movie. Tron: Ares is set to premiere on October 10, 2025, generating anticipation for its release after a lengthy wait.
In addition to Tron: Ares, Disney’s D23 Expo showcased numerous other highlights. These included the official title for Avatar 3, updates on Toy Story 5, the first trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Key, and previews of upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu content. Marvel fans also saw glimpses of the Human Torch’s costume for Fantastic Four and new footage from Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart.
