Brad Bird’s The Incredibles is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, marking two decades since its original release. The film, a tribute to superheroes like the Fantastic Four and iconic figures such as James Bond, has had only one sequel, Incredibles 2, which came out in 2018.
At the recent D23 Expo, Pixar confirmed that a third installment, Incredibles 3, is in development, with Bird returning as director for the new film.
The announcement came from Pete Docter at the conclusion of Pixar’s presentation at D23. While the news was met with enthusiasm, Docter did not provide additional details regarding the film’s release date or other specifics. This left fans excited but curious about when they might see the next chapter in the beloved franchise.
Brad Bird’s approach to filmmaking suggests that Incredibles 3 might take some time to complete. It took him 14 years to produce the sequel, indicating he does not rush through projects. Currently, Bird is also working on Ray Gunn, a sci-fi animated film he is directing for Skydance. This project, which has been a passion of Bird’s for over thirty years, might take precedence unless Skydance opts not to proceed with it.
The D23 Expo also showcased other major announcements and previews. Pixar revealed that Toy Story 5 is on the way, adding to the excitement for fans of the franchise. Marvel presented a new trailer for Agatha All Along, and exclusive trailers for Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart were shown only to the audience. Additionally, a video message from the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps revealed the Human Torch’s costume.
The event was a highlight for fans of various franchises, with Star Wars previews for Skeleton Crew and The Mandalorian and Grogu. Avatar 3 received a title reveal, and Tron: Ares was featured as one of the closing presentations of the first night. Overall, the D23 Expo was packed with exciting updates and future plans from Disney and its affiliates.
