As the summer movie season is about to start, the schedule for upcoming films continues to change. Sony has decided to delay its comic book movie “Kraven the Hunter,” originally set for a Labor Day weekend release, to December. This shift leaves Disney and Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the summer’s sole major superhero film, premiering on July 26.
Details on “Kraven the Hunter”
The film, directed by J.C. Chandor and featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the antagonist from the Spider-Man universe, will carry an R rating. “Kraven the Hunter” includes stars like Ariana DeBose, Alessandro Nivola, and Russell Crowe and is part of Sony’s larger plan to expand the Spider-Man universe with films like Venom and Madame Web.
New Release Date and Competition
‘Kraven the Hunter’ will now make its debut on December 13, the same day as the animated movie ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.’ Originally, Sony had planned to release a new ‘Karate Kid’ movie on this date, but it has now been rescheduled for May 2025.
Impact on Summer Box Office
This reshuffling could have a significant impact on the overall performance of this year’s summer box office. Industry experts like Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore had already predicted that this year’s box office might not reach the $4 billion mark achieved in 2023. With ‘Kraven the Hunter’ moving out of the summer lineup, Sony has placed its Blumhouse horror film ‘They Listen,’ starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston, in the Labor Day slot instead.
