Former WWE writer Vince Russo recently shared his thoughts on the sudden character shift of Candice LeRae and its potential repercussions for Johnny Gargano’s babyface persona.
In the past two weeks, LeRae has exhibited a mean streak on WWE RAW, first by insulting Maxxine Dupri and then by capitalizing on Katana Chance’s injury to secure a victory.
During a discussion on Legion of RAW, Russo expressed his view that LeRae’s transition to a bully lacked proper build-up and appeared abrupt.
He suggested that a gradual storyline illustrating her descent into darkness would have been more effective.
“This is what they should have done. When this happened to Maxxine Dupri, and you had Mami got out and defend her on social media. That’s when Candice LeRae should have said something back to Mami. That’s where you should have started. At least give me a seed or something.”
Russo further speculated that Gargano’s association with LeRae’s sudden heel turn might raise questions among fans. Given Gargano’s established reputation as a babyface, Russo surmised that fans might doubt his judgment considering his partner’s behavior on television.
“Now what do we have bro? We got Johnny Gargano who’s this big babyface, Johnny Wrestling. Well, Johnny, you’re can’t be that much of a judge of character if your wife is a biya*ch. We got a problem there bro because there was no story that made her become this way. And we all know this is going nowhere.”
In a separate development, Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa secured their spot at WrestleMania XL by defeating the Creed Brothers in a hard-fought match.
They are slated to compete in a six-pack Ladder Match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships against Judgment Day and four other teams.
