Xbox concluded the year with several noteworthy expansions, with Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer emphasizing the importance of avoiding “manipulative” practices in their approach. In an interview with Stephen Totilo for GameFile, Spencer explained that expansions for Xbox games are not a company-wide mandate, leaving the decision up to individual game creators.
He highlighted that expansions can be an excellent way to re-engage players who may have stepped away, but they must be thoughtfully planned and meaningful.
Discussing examples like Starfield: Shattered Space and Diablo 4’s Vessel of Hatred, Spencer underscored how impactful expansions can enrich the gameplay. Shattered Space introduced a new setting and story, while Vessel of Hatred added an overpowered new class, showcasing how expansions can be expansive in both scope and creativity. Such content, Spencer noted, can breathe new life into games when done right, enhancing the player’s overall experience.
Spencer also criticized expansions that feel like leftover or cut content from the base game, stressing the importance of presenting a unique perspective. He wants expansions to stand out as distinct experiences rather than feeling like afterthoughts. This approach aligns with his broader goal of ensuring Xbox offerings remain engaging and genuine for players.
The discussion turned to the release strategy of Shattered Space, where Spencer and Bethesda’s Todd Howard reflected on feedback. Howard questioned whether the team should have withheld features like buggies for the expansion instead of releasing them earlier in a free update. This debate highlighted the challenge of balancing incremental updates with major content drops to maximize excitement and player satisfaction.
Spencer emphasized that Xbox is continually learning and evolving its approach to expansions. He praised games like Starfield for rolling out features throughout the year and culminating with significant expansions, offering fans new ways to experience beloved titles. The focus, he stressed, is on ensuring these additions feel meaningful and contribute positively to the gaming experience.
