Gunther’s resurgence on WWE RAW has stirred debate, with former writer Vince Russo expressing dissatisfaction with the company’s handling of the acclaimed wrestler’s comeback.
Following his loss of the Intercontinental Title to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL after a staggering 666-day reign, anticipation ran high for Gunther’s next move.
However, his return to RAW last week, coupled with his announcement of entry into the 2024 King of the Ring tournament, sparked criticism from Russo.
Appearing on Wrestling’s Legion of RAW, Russo lamented Gunther’s integration into the roster alongside Ludwig Kaiser, citing it as a missed opportunity to boost the former champion.
He questioned the decision to dilute Gunther’s status after his record-breaking title reign and expressed disappointment with WWE’s booking.
“How do you go from a guy that was undefeated whatever, 600 some days, and now he’s just another package,” Russo voiced his concerns. (39:22 – 39:31)
Despite the controversy surrounding his return, Gunther showcased his prowess in the ring on RAW, securing a commanding victory over Xavier Woods.
The showdown against the 2021 King of the Ring winner affirmed Gunther’s resilience and reinforced his status as a force to be reckoned with in WWE.
