What if I were to share with you the existence of a fantasy farming simulation deeply entrenched in Chinese mythology, seamlessly blending the serene and inviting atmosphere of Stardew Valley and similar titles with RPG elements like “epic battles” and companions?
Dear reader, whose allegiance I may now be questioning, you ought to be familiar with this information already, given that we covered it back in May 2022! (Tut, tut.) Now, it has emerged from Early Access, and true to the positive acclaim it garnered, Steam users are showering it with predominantly glowing reviews.
On initial inspection, Immortal Life may appear to be just another charming and snug farming sim RPG hybrid among the multitude, but what sets it apart for me are its profound cultural underpinnings. The game is firmly grounded in Xianxia, a branch of Chinese fantasy shaped by the fundamental principles of Taoism, Chan Buddhism, Chinese martial arts, and other facets of the nation’s rich culture.
The premise of the farming component is fairly straightforward, if not somewhat familiar. Assuming the role of the player character, you’ve taken on the task of reviving the Guiyun Sect after its near-complete devastation. This involves engaging in activities such as fishing, cooking, crafting elixirs, and creating furniture – all aimed at restoring your home to its former glory.
However, as the title implies, there’s more to the narrative. For reasons undisclosed, you’re also on a quest for immortality, seeking it “through spiritual cultivation,” along with traveling to distant lands, discovering treasure, and employing your enchanting magical abilities to vanquish mythical creatures.
To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what’s unfolding in this storyline, but I do know that Immortal Life is visually stunning, exudes an incredibly relaxed vibe, and is deeply rooted in Chinese cultural influences. Players have the opportunity to embellish their town with distinctive Chinese architecture, fashion magical agricultural tools for plant irrigation, cook a variety of uncommon Western dishes, and interact with intriguing characters – all of which, in my opinion, is pretty fantastic.
Immortal Life is now available, and for a limited period, it enjoys a 20% discount on Steam.
