Techland has announced a new standalone spinoff for the Dying Light series titled Dying Light: The Beast. This game revives the original protagonist, Kyle Crane, who was introduced in the 2015 game and also featured in the 2016 DLC, The Following. During Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, the game was revealed, showcasing its connection to the original narrative and its evolution from past installments.
Set 13 years after the events of the first Dying Light and prior to Dying Light 2, The Beast follows Kyle Crane as he seeks vengeance after enduring over a decade of brutal experiments. These experiments have infused Crane with Zombie DNA, granting him formidable new abilities depicted in the game’s trailer. His journey revolves around escaping his captors and confronting the injustices he has faced.
The game is set in Castor Woods, a former tourist destination now overrun by various factions and a mysterious creature that uses the area as its hunting ground. This new environment presents a blend of friendly and hostile elements, adding to the game’s dynamic and immersive world.
The gameplay will include the familiar day/night cycle that affects zombie behavior and a cooperative mode allowing players to team up with a friend. According to Tymon Smektala, the game will offer a fully-fledged open world experience similar to previous entries but on a slightly smaller scale.
While there is no specific release date yet, Dying Light: The Beast is confirmed to be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game is expected to provide around 10 hours of main story content and up to 20 hours with additional exploration and side missions, making it about half the size of its predecessors.
