Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of both Rockstar and Gearbox, recently confirmed that it will not release two of its highly anticipated games, GTA 6 and Borderlands 4, around the same time. This decision aligns with the company’s strategy to avoid overlapping major game launches, ensuring each title has the opportunity to capture the undivided attention of fans.
Although a specific release date for GTA 6 hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to come out in Fall 2025. Meanwhile, Borderlands 4 is anticipated to launch sometime within Take-Two’s 2025 fiscal year, which extends from April 2025 to March 2026, leaving some flexibility in its release timing.
Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, commented that releasing two major titles back-to-back is not in the company’s best interests, as it could dilute their success. Zelnick made it clear in an interview with Variety that neither Take-Two nor other studios typically “stack up huge releases unnecessarily,” indicating that both games will likely be given sufficient space for individual promotion and market success.
Although the exact order of release is not confirmed, it’s noteworthy that GTA 6 was officially announced in December 2023, several months before Borderlands 4 was revealed in August 2024, which might suggest that GTA 6 could launch first.
On the development side, Rockstar is reportedly working intensively to polish GTA 6 and address every detail for its massive player base. Former Rockstar designer Ben Hinchliffe hinted that the team is focusing on perfecting the game’s responsiveness to player actions, emphasizing that much of the work involves accounting for unexpected player behaviors.
This insight reflects Rockstar’s dedication to creating an immersive open-world experience that allows for the freedom that fans have come to expect from the GTA series.
In contrast, details about Borderlands 4 remain limited, though Gearbox has revealed that the game will introduce four new Vault Hunters and aims to deepen the RPG mechanics without over-complicating the gameplay.
This approach indicates an effort to balance new features with accessibility, potentially attracting both seasoned fans and new players. Additionally, Zelnick acknowledged that while the recent Borderlands movie adaptation fell short of expectations, it did generate some renewed interest in the game series, which could benefit Borderlands 4’s eventual launch.
