Stormgate, the eagerly anticipated real-time strategy game developed by Frost Giant Studios, is now available in early access. Created by a team of former Blizzard developers known for their work on Warcraft and StarCraft 2, the game has generated substantial excitement and financial backing.
Despite the strong initial interest and significant funding from various sources, including over $2 million raised on Kickstarter and additional investments from prominent backers like Riot Games, the early feedback on the game has been mixed.
Frost Giant Studios managed to secure substantial funding, amassing over $1 million through equity investments from 419 individual investors, in addition to a notable $34.7 million in initial funding.
This financial support highlights the high expectations surrounding Stormgate and reflects the considerable anticipation from both fans and investors. However, despite this strong financial backing, the game’s early reviews suggest that it may not be meeting these expectations just yet.
The game’s early access launch on Steam has garnered a ‘Mixed’ review score, with 56% of 374 reviews being positive. Players have praised the multiplayer aspects of the game but expressed disappointment with the campaign, describing it as “generic” and “bland.” Additionally, some users have criticized the game’s pacing, noting that it feels “slow” compared to other RTS titles.
It is important to remember that Stormgate is currently in early access, and the final version is not expected to be released for at least another year. This status allows for ongoing development and adjustments based on player feedback. The game is set to go free-to-play on August 13, which will likely provide more opportunities for players to offer feedback and for the developers to make necessary improvements.
While Stormgate has not yet lived up to its high expectations, there is still hope that the developers at Frost Giant Studios will address the current issues and refine the game further. With the full release still some time away and the transition to a free-to-play model imminent, there remains potential for Stormgate to evolve into a highly regarded RTS title.
