Tales of Kenzera: Zau, the inaugural game from Abubakar Salim, known for his role as the voice of Bayek in Assassin’s Creed Origins and his appearance in HBO’s Raised by Wolves, now boasts a demo on Steam. This preview precedes the game’s anticipated release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch in April.
Unveiled as a Metroidvania-style side-scrolling action-adventure, Salim introduced Tales of Kenzera during a poignant moment at last year’s The Game Awards, where he honored his late father. Reflecting on his journey with grief, Salim expressed his satisfaction in conveying that experience through Zau’s narrative of loss, growth, and healing in Tales of Kenzera: Zau.
Drawing inspiration from African Bantu tales, the game is under development by Salim’s Surgent Studios and is set to be published by EA through its Originals label. The storyline follows Zau, a young shaman who strikes a deal with the God of death to resurrect his Baba from the shadows.
As Zau ventures through the once-vibrant yet perilous lands of Kenzera, players will guide him in utilizing an expanding array of abilities. These include cosmic powers derived from the sun and moon, enabling Zau to engage in rhythmic combat against restless spirits on his quest.
The Steam demo for Tales of Kenzera: Zau is currently available, arriving just ahead of Steam Next Fest. It encompasses the game’s initial two sections, providing a glimpse of Zau’s skills and introducing an unlockable ability. The full game is slated for launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch on April 23rd. For those impressed by the demo, a 10 percent pre-order discount is available until the launch day.
