Sony is expanding its presence in the PC gaming market, with a strategy to increase PlayStation Network (PSN) sign-ups. While Helldivers 2 initially required a PSN account for post-launch content, it later reversed this decision. However, Concord, a new 5v5 FPS developed by former Destiny team members, will require PC players to sign up for PSN from the outset.
The developers of Concord explain that the PSN requirement is essential for implementing features like cross-play and cross-progression between PC and PlayStation 5 players. Lead character designer Jon Weisnewski states that this technical layer is necessary to unify the player base and enhance the multiplayer experience.
Sony’s approach to PSN requirements varies across its PC game releases. After the backlash over Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima launched on PC with a PSN requirement only for its online mode, allowing solo play without an account. In contrast, the upcoming PC version of God of War Ragnarok will mandate a PSN account for any play mode, even though it is a single-player game.
Concord’s announcement received a mixed reaction from gamers who are weary of live service games. Despite this, the game’s strong development team and potential have generated interest. A beta is scheduled for July, leading up to its full release on August 23.
Sony’s push into the PC market continues with various strategies to integrate PSN, reflecting its goal of creating a cohesive gaming ecosystem. As more titles are released, the company aims to attract a broader audience and enhance the gaming experience across platforms.
