Sami Zayn is gearing up for WrestleMania, eyeing his chance to clinch a second championship in as many WrestleMania. His sights are set on the Intercontinental Champion, GUNTHER, whom he’ll be challenging next month.
The road to this title shot was paved on Monday Night Raw, where Zayn emerged victorious from a thrilling Gauntlet Match, earning the opportunity to face the Austrian powerhouse.
The competition was fierce, featuring formidable opponents like Chad Gable, Shinsuke Nakamura, ‘Big’ Bronson Reed, Ricochet, and JD McDonagh of Judgment Day.
The match kicked off with Ricochet, the former titleholder dethroned by GUNTHER in June 2022, facing off against McDonagh.
The high-flying Ricochet swiftly pinned McDonagh, but it was Bronson Reed who eliminated him next.
Zayn entered the fray as the fourth contender and managed to eliminate Reed before dispatching Nakamura and Chad Gable, securing his title shot in impressive fashion.
Zayn’s history with the Intercontinental Championship runs deep, having held the title three times previously. His first reign began in March 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was forced to take a hiatus from WWE programming, leading to him being stripped of the title.
However, in a memorable storyline twist, Zayn insisted he was still the rightful champion upon his return in August of the same year.
The Canadian wrestler’s second reign as Intercontinental Champion came at Clash of Champions in September 2020, where he was crowned the Undisputed Intercontinental Champion.
However, his reign was short-lived as he lost the title to Big E in December of that year. Despite setbacks, Zayn reclaimed the title for a third time in February 2022, only to drop it to Ricochet shortly after.
WrestleMania 40 promises to be a monumental event, marking the fifth annual two-night WrestleMania extravaganza. This year’s edition holds particular significance as it’s the first WrestleMania since TKO Group Holdings launched last September.
Among the highly anticipated matchups on the card is the showdown between GUNTHER and Sami Zayn for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, adding another layer of excitement to an already star-studded event.
