SAG-AFTRA has added a new tier to its Independent Interactive Media Agreement for indie projects with budgets between $15 million and $30 million. This update provides union coverage, protections against AI misuse, and access to unionized voice actors and performers for these bigger-budget indie projects.
Under this agreement, actors will receive informed consent and compensation for the use of their digital replicas, along with additional payments tied to the number of units sold. This ensures that performers are fairly compensated and protected in the evolving digital media landscape.
The Independent Interactive Media Agreement, originally revealed in February, initially included three budget tiers ranging from $250,000 to $15 million. The new expansion means that even more projects can now leverage the expertise and benefits of union performers.
Voice actor and chair of SAG-AFTRA’s Interactive Media Agreement negotiating committee, Sarah Elmaleh, emphasized the importance of this expansion for both projects and performers, highlighting the union’s commitment to protecting actors from AI exploitation.
Last year, SAG-AFTRA members voted to authorize a strike for video game actors and performers due to unresolved negotiations with major game companies like Activision, Electronic Arts, and Warner Bros regarding the Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement. The strike authorization highlighted the actors’ demand for better protection and fair compensation within the industry.
Earlier discussions this month revealed ongoing bargaining efforts, with key focus areas including AI protection and fair treatment for all members.
SAG-AFTRA executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland pointed out that resolving these issues requires companies to reconsider their stance on protecting some members over others. The union continues to push for equitable terms to avoid potential strikes and ensure fair working conditions for all its members.
