Reports have surfaced claiming that the game creation platform Dreams, which debuted on the PS4 in 2020, was previously undergoing development for PC and PlayStation 5 versions.
During a recent livestream, industry insider Lance McDonald shared insights into undisclosed plans to extend Dreams’ reach to PC and PS5 platforms. McDonald suggested that these projects were nearing completion.
As far back as 2020, Media Molecule, the developer behind Dreams, had indicated to Eurogamer that the game was already operable on the PS5, though this version was primarily experimental in nature. Additionally, there were indications of a PC port in development, aligning with Sony’s trend of releasing some of its titles on PC in recent years.
McDonald elaborated that the PS5 iteration of Dreams was poised to incorporate ray-tracing technology, while the PC version would naturally support mouse and keyboard inputs.
However, plans to bring Dreams to PC and PS5 have since been abandoned, according to McDonald, with the decision coinciding with layoffs at Media Molecule last year. Approximately 15-20 percent of the studio’s workforce was affected by these layoffs, attributed to “significant strategic changes during the past year, including shifting our focus from Dreams to our new project.”
Support for live services in Dreams had ceased earlier on September 1st.
Previously, Media Molecule’s Alex Evans had acknowledged to Eurogamer that Dreams was functional on the PlayStation 5, clarifying that it was part of their development exploration. However, Evans emphasized that there were no concrete plans in place for its release on the platform.
Media Molecule has yet to unveil details regarding its upcoming project.
PlayStation had previously announced intentions to launch more than 10 new live-service games over the next few years, although delays have affected some of these projects beyond initial projections.
