One Sea of Thieves player recently shared a heart-wrenching tale of encountering the game’s rarest item, only to have their hopes dashed by an unfortunate twist of fate.
In a Reddit post titled ‘I’m so sad,’ user SnooPoems9646 unveiled a screenshot that vividly captures the sheer disappointment of the moment. The image showcases the player proudly brandishing a distinguished shovel, having just unearthed a treasure chest adorned with luminous symbols.
Even seasoned pirates, myself included, have seldom stumbled upon the coveted Box of Wondrous Secrets. Yet, in this instance, the screenshot reveals a cruel twist for poor SnooPoems9646. In the top left corner looms a foreboding message: “Server will shut down in approximately 1 minutes,” the grammatical error in ‘minutes’ inadvertently adding insult to injury.
“I’m so sad 🙁 Server shut down right when I found it,” laments the user, their sorrow palpable. No further elaboration is necessary in the post, as the anguish speaks volumes… and presumably, because tears need a moment to flow freely.
And thus unfolds the saga of Sea of Thieves most luckless player, where a once-in-a-lifetime chance to seize the rarest loot was cruelly snatched away by the mundane and remarkably coincidental occurrence of server maintenance.
The comment section brims with reactions ranging from shock and horror to heartfelt empathy. One player recounts a similarly tragic episode from their maiden voyage in Sea of Thieves back in 2020, where they unwittingly pilfered a brigantine’s treasure, unaware that it held a Box of Wondrous Secrets.
Before they could comprehend its rarity or decide what to do, the brig returned with a vengeance, reclaiming its rightful booty. “Haven’t seen the Box of Wondrous Secrets ever since.”
“This is one of those ‘if you didn’t capture it, nobody would believe you’ kind of moments,” remarks one sympathetic observer.
“Omg… At times like these I feel there’s some special f you part of the code in the game designed to troll you,” commiserates a fellow pirate. “So sorry man.”
“This takes ‘getting Rared’ to a whole new level,” adds another. “Sorry.”
I’ve reached out to Rare for comment, inquiring if they have anything, even mere condolences, to offer this unfortunate soul.
