Randy Orton, 14-time World Champion and one of the most decorated wrestlers in WWE history, recently shared the fascinating story behind the creation of his legendary finishing move, the RKO. In a candid interview with Bill Apter at the Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling Fan Fest II event, Orton opened up about the origins of the move that has become synonymous with his in-ring persona.
For those who may not know, the RKO, a devastating cutter maneuver, was not always Orton’s go-to finisher. In fact, when he first transitioned to the main roster in 2002, he relied on a crossbody and swinging neckbreaker to put away his opponents. It wasn’t until 2003 that he began using the RKO, which has since become an integral part of his arsenal.
According to Orton, it was none other than WWE’s then-talent relations executive, John Laurinaitis, who suggested he adopt the move. As it turns out, Laurinaitis, a former wrestler himself, used a similar maneuver during his time in the ring as Johnny Ace. The advice proved to be invaluable, as the RKO has gone on to become one of the most recognizable and feared finishing moves in professional wrestling.
Over the years, Orton has occasionally experimented with other finishers, including the Punt Kick, but the RKO remains his most popular and enduring maneuver. In fact, he recently showcased its effectiveness on the May 17 episode of SmackDown, where he delivered a picture-perfect RKO out of nowhere to defeat Carmelo Hayes and advance in the King of the Ring tournament.
As Orton progresses to the semifinals, where he’ll face off against Tama Tonga on the May 25 episode of SmackDown, fans are reminded of the RKO’s enduring legacy. Many, including wrestling legends, consider it one of the greatest moves in wrestling history, and for good reason. With its precision, power, and unpredictability, the RKO has become an iconic symbol of Randy Orton’s in-ring prowess.
