Multiple sources from UploadVR have revealed details about Sony’s upcoming virtual reality hardware, designed for the PlayStation 5. The new headset is expected to offer a resolution of 4000×2080 pixels, which translates to 2000×2040 pixels per eye. This resolution is slightly less than the HP Reverb G2 but higher than the Oculus Quest 2.
Key features of the headset include gaze tracking for foveated rendering, a lens separation adjustment dial, and a vibration motor for direct haptic feedback. Sony has reportedly informed its partners about these developments. The headset will use onboard cameras to track the position of Sony’s new VR controllers and will connect to the PS5 via a USB Type-C connection.
UploadVR describes these combined features as defining a “truly next-generation virtual reality experience” for PlayStation 5 owners.
Sony confirmed in February that it was developing a “next-generation VR system” for the PS5, slated for release after 2021. Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning at Sony Interactive Entertainment, emphasized that the system would enhance various aspects such as resolution, field of view, tracking, and input. The system is designed for easy setup with a single cord connection to the PS5, promising a high-fidelity visual experience.
The new VR controller will integrate key features from the PS5’s DualSense controller and focus on superior ergonomics. While Sony has indicated that the new VR system will not launch in 2021, this early announcement aligns with the start of the development community’s work on creating new virtual reality experiences for the platform.
