Pocketpair, the developer behind Palworld, has once again demonstrated its knack for recognizing exceptional games with their latest project, Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse. This upcoming title, a blend of Metroidvania and roguelike elements, bears striking similarities to the acclaimed Dead Cells, evoking both admiration and anticipation.
Having experienced the Steam Next Fest demo for Never Grave, I can attest to its sheer enjoyment. While retaining its own quirky essence, the game introduces light city building and farming mechanics alongside support for up to four-player co-op, promising a dynamic experience. Despite its familiar inspirations, Never Grave manages to maintain a cohesive identity, unlike Palworld’s amalgamation of ideas.
While Palworld has drawn comparisons to Pokemon for its mechanics and creature designs, Never Grave takes emulation to the next level. As a seasoned Dead Cells player, I couldn’t help but notice the unmistakable parallels between the two games. From the portal systems to character possession mechanics, Never Grave echoes Dead Cells in a manner that borders on homage.
Though some may view Never Grave as a derivative creation, it offers unique twists on established conventions. Departing from Dead Cells’ stat system, players navigate a loot pool akin to Hades for upgrades, adding depth to decision-making. The integration of farming and village-building mechanics further distinguishes Never Grave, requiring players to balance resource management with character progression.
The possession mechanic in Never Grave takes center stage, offering strategic opportunities for platforming and combat. In multiplayer, players can coordinate possession abilities to create synergistic gameplay reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey. Despite its familiarity, Never Grave impresses with its execution and promises an engaging experience upon its full release in early 2024.
While Never Grave may initially seem derivative, its innovative amalgamation of elements and polished gameplay suggest the potential for a memorable gaming experience. As Pocketpair continues to refine their craft, one can only hope for further exploration of original ideas in future projects.
