Mobile gaming studio Double Loop Games has recently announced its shutdown, marking an end to its four-year journey in the industry. The closure of the studio was made public through a LinkedIn post by Emily Greer, the co-founder of Double Loop Games.
In her statement, Greer, along with fellow co-founder Shelby Moledina, expressed their pride in the achievements of their team, the positive company culture they cultivated, and the innovative games they created during their operational years.
However, Greer pointed out that, like many other small studios in 2023, Double Loop Games faced considerable challenges in securing funding and navigating the competitive marketing landscape, especially in the mobile gaming sector. These difficulties have become increasingly prevalent for small studios trying to make their mark in the mobile game market.
Despite the closure, there is a silver lining for the majority of the Double Loop team. Most of the staff members are transitioning to roles at Scopely, a renowned mobile gaming company.
They will be joining Scopely’s casual GSN studio to embark on a new project. Regrettably, four developers from Double Loop Games were unable to secure positions at Scopely, as the roles they could fill were already occupied.
As for the future, Greer and Moledina have decided to take some time to contemplate their next professional steps. Both founders have confirmed their attendance at the upcoming Game Developers Conference in March, potentially signaling their continued involvement in the gaming industry.
Double Loop Games was initially founded in February 2020 with a unique mission. The studio aimed to develop mobile games targeted at individuals who typically do not identify themselves as gamers.
Greer, in her discussions later in 2020, challenged the conventional notion of the “casual” gamer. She argued that spending an average of one hour per day or six hours a week on gaming does not align with the casual gaming stereotype.
This perspective was part of Double Loop’s philosophy to better understand and cater to the gaming habits and desires of their target audience.
