Jagex, the developer behind both Old School RuneScape and its counterpart RuneScape, finds itself under new corporate ownership. Despite this change, the dedicated MMO community remains undeterred, continuing to engage in tasks and challenges that defy expectations.
A recent triumph in this realm belongs to the esteemed content creator known as Limpwurt, who has emerged victorious from a daunting self-imposed mission undertaken over 2,500 hours of gameplay starting in August 2023, now proudly adorned with a distinctive cape and accompanied by a baby mole.
Limpwurt gained recognition through his series of videos chronicling the journey of his “Xtreme Onechunk Ironman” account. While Ironman accounts are an integral part of Old School RuneScape, restricting players from trading with others, the unique twist here lies in the concept of “chunking.”
Inspired by a previous player’s efforts, Limpwurt’s series revolves around dividing the game world into grid-like chunks. Players then navigate through these sections, unlocking content as they progress, with the added challenge of maximizing each chunk’s resources before advancing.
However, Limpwurt has taken this challenge to an unprecedented level by imposing stricter rules upon himself, including:
- Completing all high-level skilling challenges and obtaining associated skill capes
- Fulfilling all available achievement diary tasks
- Collecting all unique monster drops
- Acquiring all unique items within a chunk
- Obtaining all unique rewards from minigames
Since its inception in January 2021, Limpwurt’s video series has barely scratched the surface of the vast Old School RuneScape map. Each chunk presents an exhaustive to-do list, with recent endeavors, such as conquering a dreaded “death chunk,” proving to be exceptionally demanding.
After an arduous 2,500 hours, Limpwurt has finally achieved level 99 Construction and acquired its coveted skill cape, a feat he believes may set a record for the longest time taken to obtain such an accolade.
Construction, a skill utilized for customizing player-owned houses, is notoriously costly and tedious to train on Ironman accounts due to material constraints. Compounded by the limitations imposed by Chunk 44, Limpwurt resorted to an unconventional training method involving hundreds of thousands of bagged plants, necessitating a substantial fortune and an extensive grind of its own.
In addition to the Construction milestone, Limpwurt faced another formidable challenge: securing a pet drop from the area’s formidable giant mole boss, boasting a meager 1-in-3,000 drop rate. It took over 7,000 kills before he finally obtained the elusive “godforsaken pet,” illustrating the unforgiving nature of Old School RuneScape.
Sharing his triumph with the OSRS subreddit, Limpwurt was met with admiration and camaraderie from fellow players who understand the perseverance required for such monumental achievements.
As one viewer recalls, “I remember when he discussed the concept of using bagged plants to reach 99 Con, needing an exorbitant amount of cash, around 400m or so. The sheer determination to accomplish this goal is astounding.”
Another simply remarks, “The mad lad actually did it.”
With these Herculean tasks finally behind him, Limpwurt can now set his sights on less burdensome challenges in a new chunk, such as achieving 99 Cooking and baking a pie. Even for the most inept baker, the prospect of baking one pie pales in comparison to the daunting task of slaying thousands of giant moles in a dark cave.
