In a recent ‘business update’, Microsoft has reassured fans of its commitment to the console market amidst speculation over its intentions. The announcement confirms that four first-party Xbox exclusives will be making their way to the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch platforms.
This move sparked concerns among fans, prompting Microsoft to address these apprehensions by unveiling plans for a groundbreaking new Xbox console, promising an unprecedented leap in technical capabilities.
Sarah Bond, the President of Xbox, elaborated on these developments during an episode of the Official Xbox Podcast titled “Updates on the Xbox Business.”
She was joined by Phil Spencer, the Head of Microsoft Gaming, and Matt Booty, the Head of Xbox Game Studios. Bond revealed that Microsoft has both short-term and long-term hardware strategies for the Xbox.
Starting this holiday season, they plan to unveil some exciting hardware advancements. A tweet from the official Xbox account echoed this sentiment, promising a “robust and innovative multi-year hardware roadmap” that would introduce new console and controller options.
Bond also confirmed that Microsoft is actively working on the development of the next-generation Xbox hardware. She emphasized their commitment to delivering an unparalleled technical leap in the upcoming hardware generation.
Phil Spencer further reiterated this commitment in a discussion with The Verge, expressing pride in the hardware team’s work and emphasizing the focus on creating unique gaming experiences through innovative hardware design.
While details about the upcoming hardware remain undisclosed, leaks from last year hinted at a disc-less Xbox Series X revision and a new controller with swappable batteries, slated for release in 2024. The leaks suggested a 2028 launch for the next-generation console. However, Spencer clarified in a staff memo that the leaked information was outdated, emphasizing significant changes in their plans since then.
